Tonawanda doctor pleads guilty for role in $8.7M prescription scam

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Tonawanda doctor pleaded guilty for his role in a prescription scam, which resulted in health care benefit programs paying over $8 million in reimbursements for prescriptions and refills that were already filled out, the United States Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

65-year-old William Stephan, who is a medical doctor with a family practice, was convicted of misprision of felony and was sentenced to one year of probation and 100 hours of community service.

In April 2015, Stephan was asked by Erik Berg to sign prescriptions for compounded medications. Stephan signed the prescriptions for 19 patients, none of which were his, over several months…
