City of Memphis signs agreement with TBI to secure two state-employed scientists to focus on local criminal investigations

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — City of Memphis officials signed an agreement with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations (TBI) to secure two state-employed scientists to exclusively focus on local criminal investigations, a spokesperson announced Wednesday, July 2.

The partnership aims to expand forensic support for criminal investigations in Memphis and will begin on Aug. 1, 2025. Officials said the assistance will accelerate evidence processing and improve clearance rates.

“We’re making smart, targeted moves to support law enforcement and deliver justice for victims,” Mayor Paul Young said. “This partnership gives us access to top-tier forensic expertise at a fraction of what it would cost to hire and train in-house. At a time when every dollar in the budget matters, we’re prioritizing impact and outcomes.”…
