Sunday afternoon, firefighters were met with deadly violence on Canfield Mountain, just north of Coeur d’Alene. A man who apparently intentionally set a fire on the mountain shot and killed two responding firefighters and injured another, Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris said in a Sunday press conference. “This was a total ambush,” Norris said. Monday afternoon, officials identified the firefighters who died as 42-year-old Frank Harwood, a battalion chief for Kootenai County Fire and Rescue and 52-year-old John Morrison, a battalion chief for the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department.
