Christiansburg Police kickstart initiative to stop speeding in residential areas

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — People in residential areas may be seeing more of the Christiansburg Police Department this summer.

Officers are being stationed in different neighborhoods with the hope that just their presence will encourage folks to keep their foot off the gas. This week, CPD focused on Alleghany Street and Mount Pleasant Road. Police Chief Chris Ramsey says they pick the neighborhoods in direct response to resident concerns.

“These are smaller neighborhoods, low speed limit areas, small streets, but as the summer months come there’s a lot more people outside,” he said. “A lot of pedestrian traffic, kids out playing, that kind of thing, so there’s an increased risk to the people that live there.”

Because they’re quiet neighborhood streets, the chief doesn’t expect his officers will have to hand out too many tickets. However, he says that’s okay because the initiative wasn’t designed to be a revenue generator. The goal is to get people to slow down…
