Syracuse Police say 86% of the handguns used in crimes come from out of state

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Police Department has released new data on the origin of where guns in the city are coming from.

According to police statistics, in 2024, 86% of handguns used in crimes came from outside New York State. More than half of them came from the same three states: Ohio, Georgia and North Carolina.

These three states are all ranked below New York on “gun violence strength” metrics, according to data from the gun-safety group Everytown.
