DJS data: How many juveniles referred, released, and detained since Tolentino took over

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Since the new leader of the Department of Juvenile Services took over, nearly 700 complaints have been referred to the department from law enforcement agencies around Maryland.

Betsy Fox Tolentino assumed her role as acting secretary of DJS on June 11; from June 11 through June 26, 689 complaints were forwarded to the agency, according to a DJS spokesperson.

Law enforcement request detention 86 times, the spokesperson said, and of those 86 requests, DJS authorized initial detention 23 times, authorized GPS monitoring detention 28 times, and released the young person 35 times. It’s not immediately clear what happened in the remainder of the cases…
