Girl went overboard on Disney cruise after ‘falling backward through a porthole’, BSO says

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (CBS12) — New details were released after a 5-year-old girl fell overboard during a family vacation on a Disney cruise ship.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) released more details on Wednesday, saying the incident happened around 11:30 a.m. on June 29, on Deck 4, while the ship was sailing in international waters between the Bahamas and Port Everglades. According to BSO detectives, the child lost her balance while sitting on a railing and fell backward through a porthole.

According to the news release, the girl’s mother alerted the father, who hadn’t seen the fall. The 37-year-old father jumped into the ocean to save his daughter. After finding her, he kept them afloat until a rescue tender launched from the ship brought them back aboard — about 20 minutes later…
