As prosecutors stand by Handegard case, families come to terms with verdict

EVANSVILLE — Notwithstanding a jury’s finding that Bobby Michael Handegard is not guilty of Shane Breedlove’s 2015 killing, the Vanderburgh County prosecutors who tried the case stand by their work and maintain the evidence against Handegard was solid.

That contention, reiterated in recent days by the county’s top prosecutor, has drawn the ire of Handegard’s attorneys and his family, who proclaimed Handegard’s innocence before and during the week-long murder trial. His supporters now find themselves in the position of keeping that defense up even after Handegard’s trial ended June 27 with the 29-year-old walking out of court a free man.

The state had sought to prove that Handegard either shot and killed Breedlove, 41, in an unprovoked ambush the evening of July 19, 2015, or that Handegard assisted two other men, including his father, in carrying out the deadly shooting…
