Police charge two in April homicide

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The simultaneous arrests of three men by Louisville Metro police has resulted in two of them being charged with an April murder case that happened in the Russell neighborhood.

The arrests happened around 4:30 p.m. on July 3. Detectives arrested Maurice Heard, 22, and Joseph Coggins, 41, for the April 13, 2025 murder of Wayne Woods which happened near W. Chestnut St. and Dr. W.J. Hodge. Woods had been shot multiple times while inside a vehicle. He later died at UofL Hospital from his wounds.

Heard was arrested after being stopped by detectives with the LMPD Criminal Interdiction Division in the 900 block of Esquire Alley. At the same time, Heard and Coggins were in a vehicle that was stopped by police at Lentz Ave. and Strader Ave. The attempt to arrest them led to a standoff with police that lasted approximately 30 minutes.
