Vandalism at new business prompts owner to set up barriers in once-public space

RICHMOND, Va. — A new business in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom has become the target of vandalism, prompting concerns about access to the public art along the Canal Walk.

Padel Plant, a sporting and social club that recently opened in the area, had a glass barrier in its outdoor patio shattered and sprayed with paint. Another unsuccessful attempt was made the following day to break another barrier, prompting the owner to temporarily set up additional protective barriers.

While the once public space is now private, property owner Drew Wiltshire says they do allow the public to access it along the canal walkway. Wiltshire adds that the gate is for the safety of the business and the public…
