SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — They are dazzling, dramatic and a part of America’s birthday celebration. But for too many people, fireworks can turn a celebration into a disaster.
Dr. Hao Li, who is a Hand Surgeon at Sanford, says that there is an increase in patients every summer around the 4th of July — a lot of them are minors.
Fireworks stand supports nonprofit, fire department
“About a quarter of fireworks injuries happen in kids, kids younger than 18. So, make sure kids are being monitored when they’re using the fireworks. Do not let them do it on their own,” said Dr. Hao Li, MD, hand surgeon at Sanford Hospital.
According to the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the number of firework-related injuries treated in emergency rooms in the United States has ranged from 8,500 to 9,800 since 1997, nearly 30% were fingers, hands and wrists…
