North Carolina town considering disbanding police department

WINGATE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – The Town of Wingate is considering getting rid of its police department and having the Union County Sheriff’s Office instead provide service for the community.

Town Manager Brad Sellers said there’s space for seven officers at the Wingate Police Department, but they’ve been short-staffed for about two years. Right now, he said only four positions are filled.

“We finally came to the realization that we just can’t compete with these larger agencies,” Sellers said…
