Man allegedly shoots at deputy during welfare check, gets shot by nearby homeowner

SENECA, S.C. — State agents have joined the investigation into an exchange of gunfire with a man who allegedly opened fire on South Carolina deputies on Thursday night.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said Oconee County deputies received a 911 call for a welfare check at Gail Court in Seneca, where they encountered a man who reportedly set fire to his own apartment.

As he was exiting the apartment, authorities say the armed suspect exchanged gunfire with a responding deputy. At this point, state investigators said he ran to a nearby residence where he was shot by the homeowner…
