Behind the scenes: Sanibel’s popular shell museum, from octopus to large, edible sea snail

The amount of care that is required to take care of a pet is an understatement for those who aren’t pet owners. Now, put yourself in the shoes of the aquarists at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium, where they manage hundreds of aquatic animals over the course of a day.

The National Shell Museum & Aquarium recently completed Phase 1 of the museum’s full re-design and re-installation of its shell exhibits and the Great Hall after Hurricane Ian significantly damaged it on Sept. 28, 2022. The Great Hall reopened on May 24.
