Matamoros man sentenced to federal prison for illegal reentry into the U.S.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — A 54-year-old man from Matamoros, Mexico, has been sentenced to 51 months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States, according to U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.

Luis Ernesto Hernandez-Doria pleaded guilty on April 9 and is expected to face removal proceedings after his imprisonment.

U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera handed down the sentence, citing Hernandez-Doria’s extensive criminal record, which includes four prior felony and six misdemeanor convictions. The court emphasized the need for a substantial sentence to deter him from future illegal reentry. Hernandez-Doria has three previous felony convictions for illegal reentry and for taking a weapon from an officer.
