Police seize mortars after illegal fireworks show near Cathedral Park

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland police said they seized several mortars after an illegal fireworks show near Cathedral Park on Thursday night.

Just after midnight, officers patrolling the area noticed the fireworks going off underneath the St. Johns Bridge and began looking for who was responsible.

The officers found a 20-year-old man on a floating dock just beneath the bridge and issued him a citation after finding multiple additional fireworks in his possession, police said.

The sale and use of all fireworks has been banned in the City of Portland. However, police urged people not to call 911 to report fireworks use. They should instead call the non-emergency line to keep the 911 line available for more dire emergencies, such as active fires and serious medical problems.
