Don’t let fireworks fizzle your fun: Safety tips from Portage Public Safety

PORTAGE, Mich. — Fireworks are a fun way to end the night after celebrating America’s Independence Day, but in order to avoid a trip to the emergency room, Portage Public Safety has some tips to stay safe this holiday.

“I can’t tell you how many fires that I’ve been on, where, the trash can, dumpster up against the house, was that it caused because of fireworks discarded the wrong way,” Portage Public Safety Fire Division’s Battalion Chief of Community Risk Reduction William Graham said.

“So when you’re done with your fireworks at night, the best thing to do is douse them with water, maybe put them in a bucket of water and let them sit for the night, and then the next morning actually throw them away.”

Additionally, fireworks should always be ignited in an open, paved area away from any flammable objects…
