Descendants of Revolutionary War soldiers honor ‘patriot ancestors’ at Fourth of July event in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution held an Independence Day celebration at James White Fort in Knoxville Friday morning.

The event included a presentation of colors by the Color Guard, a musket volley and a reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Mark DeNicola, president of the Stephen Holston Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, explained that he first became interested in this era of history when he learned that one of his ancestors had fought in the Revolutionary War.

“The mission of the Sons of the American Revolution is, number one, to educate, preserve history and also promote patriotism,” DeNicola said. “We see this as a way to not only honor our patriot ancestors, but also to promote this great James White Fort which was preserved for prosperity and to educate the general public on what actually occurred back in 1776.”
