A mosaic isn’t just a work of art—it’s an enormous process: thousands of tiny moments pieced together, shaped by the hands of people who care deeply about their craft. At Sunset Park in west St. Pete (Park St. and Central Ave), that process is coming to fruition after two years of designing, cutting, engineering, and, finally, installing.
Stretching an impressive 175 feet through the center of the park, a new mosaic walkway is nearly complete, the work of three local artists: Alex Kaufman, George Retkes, and Laura “Miss Crit” Spencer. Their collaborative piece tells a sweeping story of St. Pete’s natural beauty—threading together dolphin pods, sea turtles, mangroves, and the golden calm of a Florida sunset. The project is expected to be fully complete by the end of July.
“We’ve been working together on this for over a year,” says Alex, who dove into mosaics after being inspired by public art in New York. “It’s our first major public mosaic, and it connects all three of our skill sets. That’s what makes it special.”…
