As Independence Day draws near, Austin city officials are ramping up their annual safety campaign, reminding residents to celebrate with caution. The Austin Fire Department, Austin Police Department, Austin-Travis County EMS, and Homeland Security & Emergency Management have collectively emphasized the importance of following safety guidelines during the Fourth of July festivities. Residents are encouraged to enjoy organized fireworks displays – such as the Austin Symphony Orchestra’s concert and fireworks show – rather than engaging in risky behavior that could result in injury or property damage.
While fireworks form the crux of the night’s festivities, pets often find themselves at odds with the celebratory blasts, struggling with the loud noise. The City suggests keeping pets in a secure place, with the television or radio on to provide a distraction, and drawing the curtains or blinds. According to a statement from the city of Austin, “Fireworks can cause serious injury and significant property damage,” which is why Austin has made it illegal to possess or use fireworks within city limits without a permit. Violators may be slapped with a fine of up to $2,000. Illegal firework activity can be reported to Austin 3-1-1, and affidavit complaints against specific individuals can be filed with the Municipal Court.
Safety around barbecues is another concern, with officials urging the public to keep grills on a non-flammable, level surface, a safe distance from structures. Keeping a watchful eye on the grill, along with having a spray bottle for flare-ups and a functional fire extinguisher at the ready, remains critical for a safe holiday cookout.
