Minneapolis streets got a little safer recently, thanks to a routine traffic stop by the city’s Operation Safe Summer team. In a post that surfaced on the Minneapolis Police Department’s Facebook page, the team recounted their encounter with a driver who was found with a marijuana “blunt” in his mouth while behind the wheel near 33rd Avenue North and Emerson Avenue North. But this stop was no ordinary traffic violation.
This particular driver, as the MPD details, not only indulged in controlled substances while operating a motor vehicle, but they also had an outstanding theft warrant. The already troubling situation escalated when officers discovered a loaded gun in the vehicle, one for which the driver had no legal permit.
While police departments often emphasize their triumphs over crime, this incident paints a broader picture of the challenges plaguing urban streets.
