As Houston-area residents flock to the region’s ubiquitous firework stands to prep Fourth of July displays, the city’s official bird — a stocky heron anointed with a striking yellow tuft between its eyes — is busy fussing over its young.
“There’s a ton of yellow-crowned night herons still nesting right now,” said Rhonda Murgatroyd, managing director of Wildlife Response Services.
