Director Gareth Edwards Discusses Childhood Dreams and “Jurassic World Rebirth”
“Jurassic World Rebirth” director Gareth Edwards recently sat down to discuss his experience working on the latest installment of the iconic dinosaur franchise. For Edwards, the project was a dream come true, offering him the chance to collaborate with his childhood hero, Steven Spielberg.
Edwards, who previously directed the “Star Wars” spin-off “Rogue One” and the sci-fi thriller “The Creator,” shared that “Jurassic Park” and “Star Wars” were the two franchises he would drop everything to work on. When Spielberg presented him with the script for “Rebirth,” the decision was a no-brainer.
The film, now playing in theaters, takes place years after the events of “Jurassic World Dominion” and follows Scarlett Johansson as she leads a team to a remote island research facility to retrieve dinosaur genetic material. Edwards praised screenwriter David Koepp’s script for its stand-alone feel, allowing the film to tell a complete story without relying heavily on previous installments. He noted that, despite the franchise’s potential for sequels, he has yet to discuss the possibility with Universal.
The film features several nostalgic nods to Spielberg’s earlier work, including “Jurassic Park” and “Jaws.” Edwards admitted these were partly intentional, explaining that the project felt like a “magical ticket back to childhood.” He embraced the opportunity to create a “love letter” to Spielberg, incorporating elements reminiscent of the director’s iconic films.
Edwards also spoke about his experience working with Spielberg, describing him as heavily involved throughout the filmmaking process. From pre-production meetings and daily reviews to feedback on the first cut, Spielberg’s presence was a constant source of guidance and inspiration.
Edwards recounted a story of his first encounter with Spielberg, which involved a video message sent by Peter Jackson in which Spielberg praised Edwards’ work on “Godzilla.” This moment, Edwards explained, solidified his purpose as a filmmaker.
Reflecting on the upcoming 10th anniversary of “Rogue One,” Edwards expressed gratitude for the film’s positive reception while maintaining a focus on its long-term impact. He emphasized the importance of how a film is perceived years after its release, rather than initial reactions. While he remains a devoted fan of the “Star Wars” universe, Edwards stated he is content to move forward with his own projects.
