ALDOT adds traffic enhancements in Spanish Fort

SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WALA) – The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) posts on its Facebook page that it has made enhancements to a busy road in Baldwin County.

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has added new traffic enhancements to the center turn lane along US-31 in Spanish Fort, which opened in August 2024. The improvements come in response to growing concerns about driver behaviors and improper use of the lane during peak traffic periods.

Motorists will now notice newly installed traffic delineators—vertical markers placed at strategic points within the center turn lane. The intent of these additions are to mark where drivers should start their left turn movement. As an added benefit, these traffic devices will also discourage drivers from misusing the lane as a passing lane.

Recent Findings

Following the project’s opening, in consultation with local law enforcement, ALDOT conducted a safety study. The study observed how the new lane is being used by drivers.
