I think it’s safe to say that most are unaware of exactly how much trouble you can get yourself in by how you behave on social media. One Illinois man was just found guilty of supporting terror attacks online according to the FBI in Chicago and could face up to 130 years in federal prison.
The Northern District of Illinois’ United States Attorneys Office just shared news a few days ago revealing what just happened to a man in Illinois. They say Ashraf Al Safoo, 41 of Chicago, was a leader of Khattab Media Foundation. They created videos, articles, essays, and infographics in support of ISIS and encouraged “lone wolf attacks” on the United States and other allies opposed to ISIS. Images of Terrorist attacks and mass shootings in the United States were a part of that campaign led by Al Safoo.
Here are the charges he was found guilty of:
- 1 count of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization
- 1 count of conspiracy to transmit threats in interstate commerce,
- 1 count of conspiracy to intentionally access a protected computer without authorization,
- 4 counts of intentionally accessing a protected computer without authorization,
- 4 counts of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization
“The conviction of Al Safoo affirms the FBI’s strong commitment to protecting and defending the United States from anyone who seeks to harm our citizens,” said FBI Chicago SAC DePodesta. “Those who willingly associate with terrorist organizations or support violent extremism will be investigated, disrupted, and held accountable. It is thanks to the FBI Chicago Joint Terrorism Task Force and its partner agencies that our community is safe from those who pose a fundamental threat to our nation.”…
