New Jurassic Movie Big, But Not Biggest

“Jurassic World Rebirth” Roars to Life with $147 Million Opening, But Still Trails Previous Installments

The dinosaurs are back, and so are the big box office numbers. “Jurassic World Rebirth” clawed its way to a $147.3 million domestic opening over the extended Independence Day weekend.

The film, starring Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey, benefited from a two-day head start, snagging $25.3 million on Thursday and another $26.3 million on the Fourth of July itself. Globally, the prehistoric behemoth added another $171 million to its haul, bringing the worldwide total to over $318 million.

While the film’s performance is impressive, it’s worth noting that it’s a step down from previous “Jurassic World” installments. Excluding the Thursday and Tuesday holiday previews, the film earned approximately $91.5 million from Friday to Sunday. This pales in comparison to the $208.8 million debut of 2015’s “Jurassic World” and the respective $148 million and $145 million openings of “Fallen Kingdom” (2018) and “Dominion” (2022).

The latest installment, a relaunch of the franchise that began with the 1993 classic “Jurassic Park,” reportedly carried a production budget of around $180 million, significantly less than the $1.1 billion combined cost of the previous two films. While this puts the film on track to recoup its production costs, the true measure of success will be whether it can join its predecessors in the billion-dollar club. With international audiences showing significant enthusiasm for the franchise, the global box office will be key to “Jurassic World Rebirth” reaching this milestone.
