SF reports fewer tents. Advocates say that doesn’t mean fewer homeless

New data from the city of San Francisco shows the lowest number of tents in the city since San Francisco began collecting the data in 2019.

As Mission Local first reported, the city counted 165 tents or other structures in June. But homeless advocates caution that the decline in tents is not an indicator that there are fewer people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco.

“Unfortunately, the number of tents are down, but not the number of people living out on our streets,” said Christin Evans, the vice chair of San Francisco’s Homelessness Oversight Commission.

Evans said the city has gotten “more aggressive” since the pandemic in reducing the tent count, which she believes has led to the steady decline in the number of tents over the past several years…
