New York air quality alert issued as pollution levels spark safety fears

The warning comes on the heels of severe thunderstorms that battered other parts of the state this weekend

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an air quality alert on Sunday for all five New York City boroughs, as well as Rockland and Westchester counties.

The alert, which is in effect until 11 p.m. local time, says that outdoor air pollutants are predicted to exceed levels considered safe under the Air Quality Index. The amount of ground level ozone is expected to surpass a value of 100 on the index, indicating potentially unsafe breathing conditions for those with certain health conditions…
