Birmingham Police Department conducts illegal fireworks, firearms operation on Fourth of July

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Birmingham Police Department’s Special Operations Bureau conducted an illegal fireworks operation on July 4 to enhance public safety.

According to the BPD, Operation Thunder on the Mountain focused on targeting individuals in possession of illegal firearms and fireworks within the Downtown Switch District, including the area surrounding Railroad Park.

In an effort to ensure safety during Independence Day celebrations, officers successfully apprehended individuals who were engaged in the unlawful possession, concealment and use of illegal firearms. The BPD says officers also recovered and seized a significant quantity of illegal fireworks that violated city ordinances.

All confiscated fireworks were turned over to the Birmingham Tactical Unit to be properly disposed of in accordance with department policy and public safety protocols…
