Deputys Compassionate Words Help Save Woman From Jumping Off Virginia Bridge

A dramatic encounter on the George P. Coleman Bridge in Virginia ended with a life saved, thanks to the swift and compassionate actions of local first responders.

At approximately 8:50 a.m. on July 1, York-Poquoson Sheriffs Deputy First Class Ryan McManus was dispatched to a call for a disabled vehicle on the bridge, which crosses the York River between Yorktown and Gloucester Point. When he arrived, he witnessed a woman exit the vehicle and climb over the railing, appearing to contemplate jumping.

The sheriff’s office shared body-worn camera video that captured the tense and emotional moments that followed. As McManus approached, he spoke to the woman with empathy, urging her not to take her own life. When she told him, “You dont even know me,” he replied, “I dont have to know you to care about you.”…
