HOMETOWN HERO: Young actor takes type 1 diabetes fight to Washington D.C.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Almost two million Americans are living with type 1 diabetes, and every day, a small miscalculation in the amount of insulin they take could mean a matter of life and death.

Zach Lumelski was 10 years old when he got the life-altering diagnosis. Now he’s a rising sophomore at the King’s Academy in West Palm Beach, and the most important story this young actor is telling is the one he lives every day. Zach is this week’s Hometown Hero.

“The day I found out I was just going for, like, a yearly doctor checkup,” Zach says. “But it was hard because it’s in the middle of COVID, so I wasn’t even going to go before, but they tested my urine and found high levels of sugar, so I was sent to the ER and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.”…
