Chicago marks ‘best’ Independence Day weekend in a decade: 9 killed, 44 more shot

A total of 51 people were shot—seven fatally—over the Independence Day weekend, according to HeyJackass, a site that independently tracks Chicago crime data. Two additional victims were killed by other means—one was shot, the other beaten—bringing the weekend’s homicide total to nine.

While the number may seem high, it marks the lowest Fourth of July weekend toll since at least 2015, based on the site’s records. Although 2018 saw one fewer victim, that year’s holiday weekend spanned nearly six days due to the Fourth falling on a Wednesday.

Chicago police and fire crews responded to three mass shootings over the holiday weekend, which accounted for 15 of the total victims. One of those shootings occurred in the 2700 block of South California, steps from the Cook County Jail. A mass shooting is typically defined as an incident in which four or more people are shot.
