Amarillo, Canyon Independence Day celebrations sparkle throughout weekend

Amarillo and Canyon residents had different ways of celebrating the Fourth of July weekend, whether it be fireworks, picnics, swimming, boating at the lake, going to the movies or one of the many events offered in this area. And with the Fourth falling on a Friday, the party certainly continued on.

While the weather was unseasonably cool on the actual Fourth of July, it heated up on the 5th, when people were still celebrating the nation’s independence. Fireworks were plentiful and the rocket’s red glare could be seen from almost any vantage point in Amarillo or Canyon.

What a Blast! at Don Harrington Discovery Center

Several families took part in the exciting exhibits at Don Harrington Discovery Center’s “What a Blast” Saturday. It was much cooler indoors, and youngsters were able to play their hearts out on fun toys and equipment.

The day at DHDC started at 9:30 a.m. and offered a spark-filled day of fun for the kiddos, families and science lovers of all ages as they explored the science of combustion, beginning with a bottle rocket build and launch. Attendees then got to see high-energy demos and get a closer look at how fireworks really work in a Summer Science Spectacular. Afterward, they could step back in time and explore fire-related artifacts from the experts at the Panhandle- Plains Historical Museum…
