Fatal cyclist crashes hit a record high in 2022. See data for each Louisiana parish.

In 2022, the number of cyclist deaths nationwide reached a record high of 1,105, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Between 2019 and 2023, 170 cyclists died from fatal motor vehicle crashes in Louisiana, according to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

These Louisiana parishes had the highest number of fatal motor crashes involving a cyclist:

  • Orleans Parish with 28 deaths,
  • East Baton Rouge Parish with 26 deaths,
  • Lafayette Parish with 16 deaths,
  • Ascension Parish with 11 deaths,
  • Jefferson and Ouachita parishes with eight deaths each,
  • Rapides Parish with seven deaths,
  • Calcasieu Parish with six deaths,
  • and Lafourche, St. Landry and Iberia parishes with five deaths each.

Bossier, Natchitoches, St. John the Baptist, Evangeline, St. Charles, Allen, Plaquemines and Jackson parishes had one cyclist death due to a motor vehicle crash…
