Volunteer mentors help middle schoolers gain social skills, feel less alone

Mentor Club lunches at Shasta and Cascade Middle Schools are lively affairs.

Each mentor and mentee pair is unique, said Kate Eterno, site coordinator for Bethel School District’s Middle School Mentor Program and fly on the wall at mentor lunches. One duo paints together with watercolors, and another crochets together. Others hunch over strategy games or play ping pong or pool. And then there are the talkers, Eterno said, who set aside their lunches and dive straight into their weekly life updates.

The program pairs adults and students in both Bethel and Eugene School District 4J middle schools. They meet for a 30-minute lunch once a week, in an effort to give students extra individualized attention and support…
