Man Tries to Sell “Pawn Stars” a Map, Gets Low-Ball Offer

Additional Coverage:

“Pawn Stars” viewers know Rick Harrison loves a good bargain, but his lowball offer for a supposedly historic map left one seller reeling. The guest arrived hoping to score $15,000 for a large map charting the voyages of Captain James Cook, the famed British explorer. Harrison, however, countered with a paltry $400.

While acknowledging Cook’s impressive seafaring feats and circumnavigating the globe three times, Harrison honed in on the map’s condition. A glued-on label, discoloration, and a crease where the map had been folded significantly diminished its value.

Calling in expert Mark Hall-Patton, Harrison confirmed the map was from the second printing of Cook’s voyages. Hall-Patton echoed Harrison’s concerns about the map’s condition, particularly the glued-on label, suggesting a costly restoration process.

Harrison estimated the map’s potential resale value at around $2,000, even after repairs. This explained his low initial offer.

The seller swiftly rejected the $400, stating he was “definitely interested in a good number,” but $400 was unacceptable. Recognizing the impasse, Harrison declined to negotiate further, leaving the seller surprised by the map’s low valuation.
