Officials to honor Portsmouth WWII veteran on 100th birthday

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A WWII veteran and community leader will be celebrated this Saturday, July 12 in honor of his 100th birthday.

Horace Savage is a Portsmouth native who served in Normandy after D-Day and since retirement from the military, he has dedicated almost 40 years to the Portsmouth Public Schools community as a teacher, coach, and assistant superintendent.

Local WWII veteran remembers his time in the war

This centennial celebration does not just celebrate Savage and his local impact, but also marks the launch of a scholarship fund in his name to benefit the students of Portsmouth.

This celebration is a ticketed event. Proceeds will go towards the Horace Savage Scholarship and will take place at St. Mark’s Missionary Baptist Church in Portsmouth beginning at 11 a.m…
