Indicted Memphis gynecologist now faces more charges

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A Memphis doctor accused of abusing his position and violating patients’ trust now faces more federal charges.

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar appeared in federal court Monday. He pleaded not guilty to a new indictment that added 13 counts to an already long list of federal charges. He now faces 36 total charges following his February arrest.

Prosecutors said those crimes happened at his Poplar Avenue Women’s Clinic. The FBI carried out a search warrant at that clinic in April 2024. A medical expert the government hired reviewed more than 11,000 pages of clinical records and found that at least 100 hysteroscopies were unnecessary, allegedly done without proper consent, done with reused or unsterilized devices, and billed fraudulently to Medicare and Medicaid…
