Modern Diner in Pawtucket is up for sale

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — After serving up breakfast in a 1940s Sterling Streamliner for more than 40 years, Modern Diner is for sale.

The family-owned eatery said it was one of the first diners in the country to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It also gained further recognition in 2015 when the Food Network highlighted the diner’s custard French toast and named the eatery one of the top five diners in America.

Nick Demou grew up in Pawtucket and founded Modern Diner with his late father Arthur Demou in 1985. The family plans to sells the diner and retire.

“This is a bittersweet decision,” Demou said in a press release. “The Modern Diner has been part of our family for generations and we’ve loved every moment of serving our neighbors, watching families grow, and being a source of comfort and nostalgia.”
