National Pet Fire Safety Day warns of pet-related fire risks

LUBBOCK, Texas–July 15 is National Pet Fire Safety Day and according to the National Fire Protection Association, pets accidentally start around 1,000 home fires each year. To reduce the risk, the American Red Cross recommend the following:

  • Extinguish Open Flames: Never leave pets unattended near candles, stoves, or fireplaces. Always put out any flames completely before leaving your home.
  • Remove or Cover Stove Knobs: Pets can accidentally turn knobs and start a fire. Use knob covers or remove them entirely when not in use.
  • Use Flameless Candles: These are safer alternatives that use LED lights instead of open flames especially important if you have curious pets like cats.
  • Secure Young Pets: When you’re away, keep young or high-energy pets in crates or behind baby gates in pet-safe areas to prevent access to fire hazards.
