GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Hundreds of people started running on the Blue Bridge during the July 4th fireworks finale over fears of a shooting.
Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said Monday that no shots were fired during the chaos. He said guns were drawn in the crowd, and people started yelling about what they were seeing.
“Because of that commotion, word started spreading quickly, because the fireworks were still going on, I think because of the excitement, some people might have mistaken the sound of the fireworks for gunshots, and it just caused hundreds of people to start running, creating a very dangerous situation,” Chief Winstrom said. “Fortunately, because of the safety plan that we had in place, no one was hurt.
