Federal funding cuts threaten the existence of Pittsburgh nonprofits

In 2024, Open Up Pittsburgh hosted more than 450 free classes at its Lawrenceville studio and throughout Pittsburgh, attracting at least 2,500 visitors. Butler Street patrons and residents of neighboring counties alike converged on the storefront for sessions.

The nonprofit’s yoga and mindfulness education is open to all but focuses on serving people living with disabilities. Its in-person, community-centric programming is a rarity across the state and nation, founding Director Marissa Vogel says.

But its mission and audience won’t be enough alone to keep the organization from closing this year…
