Wealthy Bay Area city waives key affordable housing requirement

The Marin County town of Sausalito, once a haven for working-class shipbuilders, may have cemented its more recent status as an exclusive community when its council waived a key affordable housing requirement.

Councilmembers had a heated discussion at a July 1 meeting. At the center of the conflict was an amendment to the city’s affordable housing requirements. Previously, all buildings with up to five units in commercial areas had to have one affordable unit. Now, that requirement has been waived.
