SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A 61-year-old man drowned Monday while swimming in the Willamette River, Springfield police officials said.
Springfield police said the man was hanging out at Island Park with friends when he decided to go for a swim in the river. The friends lost sight of him, but about a half-hour later, bystanders spotted him face down in the water. A water rescue was performed by Eugene Springfield fire and the man was pronounced dead at 6:44 p.m.
