Nelson County to change short-term rental tracking process

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — Nelson County is set to change its process for tracking short-term rental properties after losing access to information from the Commission of Revenue.

Jesse Rutherford, a member of the Nelson County Board of Supervisors, explained that the county previously relied on this data to monitor rental ownership. The board is now considering a new requirement for short-term rental owners to fill out a form with the Planning and Zoning Department before obtaining a business license.

“It is fairly important,” Rutherford said, “I hate seeing businesses that are lawfully paying the tax and then knowing that there is a whole bunch of individuals around them that are not.”…
