Complaints of flooded homes, high bills & safety plague Columbus’s Enhanced Meter Project

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Columbus water customers are expressing frustration over skyrocketing bills following the mandatory installation of new water meters. One customer told ABC6 On Your Side that his bill jumped from $115 to nearly $950 after receiving the enhanced meter required by the city last month.

In April, Marlon Jefferson, another customer, received a $2,100 bill after his meter was upgraded. The city attributed this to a billing glitch and adjusted the bill. The city explained that previous meters did not always accurately track water usage, leading to discrepancies.

After ABC6 News contacted the city regarding the $900 bill complaint, the water and power department reduced the bill by $733, leaving the customer with a $208 balance. However, the city warned that the customer’s quarterly bill would increase as the old meter did not track all water usage…
