Canton Murder Suspect Daniel Mattay Faces Enhanced $1.5 Million Bond After Alleged Jailbreak Attempt

The man charged with the murder of 26-year-old Ryan Godbey, who remains missing since June 19, has been implicated in an alleged jailbreak attempt. Daniel Mattay, 33, stood before a Canton Municipal Court judge yesterday, where the judge, informed of Mattay’s additional charges, raised the bond to $1.5 million, launching from the initial $1 million after police described the evolution of the case from a search for a missing person to a homicide investigation, a story detailed by WKYC.

Jackie Godbey, the mother of the victim, spoke on the harrowing loss of her son, who was last seen at Darlin’s Crew in Canton, a member of the LGBTQ+ community doing drag and helping others in the Canton LGBTQ+ community fully embrace their identity. She expressed to the Canton Repository, “This is his life and he was living his life.” She also highlighted the tragedy of his life being unjustly taken. The suspect, Daniel Mattay, has been charged with murder, felonious assault, strangulation, and domestic violence, according to court proceedings cited by Cleveland 19.

During the hearing, the judge took into account the severity of the new charges against Mattay, who allegedly tried to escape the Stark County Jail on July 3 and was charged with additional counts of attempted escape and vandalism. The judge declared, “The court has become aware that since he was served with these warrants, he’s also been charged with attempt to escape and vandalism while at the Stark County Jail, which indicates to me a willingness not to appear in court,” according to WKYC.
