Ghost vehicles still evading tolls despite city crackdown

The number of cars driving through Metropolitan Transportation Authority crossings without paying tolls roughly stayed the same between 2023 and 2024, even as the MTA is trying to crack down on so-called “ghost vehicles.”

Ghost vehicles, which have hidden, obstructed or phony license plates, are able to avoid paying automatic tolls and it costs the city about $50 million a year.
