Durham Leads North Carolina in School Resource Officer Program Success

Durham, North Carolina, is setting a statewide standard for effective school resource officer (SRO) programs, prioritizing community-based solutions over traditional criminal justice approaches. The efforts are showing measurable impacts, according to data shared at a recent Durham Public Schools Board of Education meeting.

WRAL reports that in the meeting, Sheriff Clarence Birkhead described the program as the best in the state, emphasizing its focus on redirecting students to community resources rather than funneling them into the criminal justice system. The progressive initiative is implemented across both middle and high schools in Durham.

Durham SRO Program Impact Reflected in Data

Durham SROs have seen significant decreases in calls for service. During the 2024-2025 school year, they received approximately 620 calls, down from over 800 the previous year, and a sharp decline from more than 2,000 calls two years prior. This trend reflects a growing reliance on community referrals, which officers described as a core component of their work.

Durham’s SROs are also reshaping perceptions within the school community. Officers emphasize that trust and approachability are key to their roles, ensuring students view them as allies rather than adversaries. By spending time with students and responding to their needs, SROs are positioning themselves as proactive resources for young people.
