KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Knoxville City Council on Tuesday gave the go-ahead for three major engineering projects, including a high-tech project to improve traffic flow along a busy roadway.
Councilmembers approved a total investment of $3.9 million for the design and construction of an Advanced Traffic Management System along Middlebrook Pike. The project will improve traffic flow by allowing for real-time adjustments to traffic signals.

The system will connect 23 signalized intersections on Middlebrook Pike and University Avenue, between College Street to the east and Joe Hinton Road near the city’s western edge, through a fiber-optic communications network. The traffic signals will be remotely programmable and replace current equipment that is at least 25 years old.
Construction will begin this fall and is estimated to be finished by winter 2027…
